Is it better just to visit?

As I’ve progressed in my career I’ve always thought I’d have to move to a larger market to realize the professional growth I feel I’m capable of. As I get closer to making that move I’m starting to question if I need the big city to have that success. It’s the age old question: is it better to be a big fish in a small pond or a medium fish in a big pond?

A little about me: I have approximately 7 years of sales experience and have been pretty successful in a role where I’m only responsible for myself. In the near future I should have the opportunity to add formal team leadership experience to the resume and I’ll also finish my MBA next year. So while I’m probably still a small fish, I’m poised for a growth spurt.

For the last few years I figured I would look for opportunities in a larger market after I finished school and had some management experience but now as I get closer to seeking those opportunities I’m starting to question myself. Last night I had a conversation with a new friend who recently moved to our area to get away from a big city, we discussed the issues of being in an area with too many people but we also discussed the benefits that come with population density.

As well as the professional opportunities in a bigger city, cultural and societal benefits are available such as art and culture, educational opportunities and of course professional sports. And now we get into the family aspect of what’s next. Would my wife like being in a bigger city? Is she willing to leave her family here in Reno? Will my kids be better off in a bigger city? Would I be able to provide them with the lifestyle that I might be able to provide them here? Is the rat race worth the benefits of professional success?

What would you suggest? What am I not considering? Is it better just to visit or would you really like to live there?

Oompa And The Automobile Museum: Experience Revisited

This week I visited the National Automobile Museum and admired the art work of Robert Cinkel whose art is displayed in the museum. During my brief visit I thought of my wife’s grandfather (Oompa) who is a painter and would surly enjoy the art and the cars. That afternoon I spoke with Robert and the next day had the opportunity to take Oompa back to the museum to meet the artist and tour the museum.

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog titled There’s No Substitute For Experience in which I shared how much I value the opportunity to learn from others experience. The afternoon at with Oompa and Robert at the museum was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. The two men, 71 (Robert) and 90 years old respectively, talked for more than an hour as we strolled through the museum enjoying the artists paintings and the museum’s car collection. Oompa shared stores of a 1949 Jaguar he once had and Robert shared tales of the paintings and the cars and I just soaked in the experience.

The opportunity to take Oompa on a field trip and watch him make a new friend and share stories of his youth was a treasure and I’ll never forget it. If you have someone in your life who might enjoy a museum don’t miss the opportunity to spend an afternoon with them, it’ll be a great time.

Is life happening to you?

There are basically two types of people in this world, those who control what happens to them and those who believe they don’t. We all know that person who thinks the world is conspiring against them. The person that believes the reason their bills didn’t get paid or their car broke down is someone else’s fault or that karma is out to get them.

In their mind there’s no correlation between the fact that they didn’t make it to work for a week and they didn’t have enough money to make rent or the reason their car broke down was that they haven’t change the oil in their car for a year.

There are very few things in this world we don’t have control of or at least have the ability to influence a great deal.

Do the right thing and more often than not bad things won’t happen to you.

Treat people with respect and they’ll more often than not treat you the same.

Don’t procrastinate to the point that the task or duty can’t get done.

Get up and get moving, no one’s going to hand you anything in life. And if someone has, it won’t last forever.

Come on, it’s time to take control.

Remarkable Growth

Well this is it, my last “required” blog post. It’s been a great experience learning about the blogosphere over the last few months and I’m a little more comfortable sharing my thoughts and ideas than I was before I started.

I created this site because I had to for a class and now I’ll shift gears and do it by choice. I’m eager to continue creating content and sharing; now for the tough part, figuring out why I’m doing it.

I started blogging with a directive to create something that I could someday monetize, something others would find value in but I’m not sure I was able to do that. Writing this blog has given me the opportunity to reflect on what that means to me and why I’m writing at all.

During the last few months two words have stuck with me: remarkable and growth. Remarkable stands out because my professor has time and again told us to be “remarkable”, to create remarkable content, to make a remarkable impact on our audience. Growth stands out because I think I’ve grown recently and that’s what I hope to do in the future; grow as a professional, grow as an individual, grow as a father and as a partner.

So with that I’ve created a new wordpress blog entitled Remarkable Growth (remarkablegrowth.wordpress.com). In this new blog will share my experiences as a professional, an individual, a father and a partner. I haven’t posted to that site yet and I might not for a couple of weeks but I will transition in the near future.

I hope you’ll join me and find value in my experiences and maybe learn a lesson or two that you don’t have to live through to gain experience from. Can’t wait!

It’s time to adapt

Last night I tweaked my left knee in my beer league softball game. And that’s my good knee, I’m in trouble. And more than my knee my shoulder hurts today too. It’s hell getting old.

I have doctor’s appointment tomorrow to look at my knee. I’m pretty sure I’m just being a pus but I should at least get it looked at.

When I was younger I could eat like hell and exercise enough to not get too fat, slow or boring. In the last few years I’ve resisted change. I’ve continued to eat like hell and I haven’t exercised enough. The 5 extra pounds I used to lose in the summers have added up over the last few years. I was counting on some good weather to give me a chance to trim down, and just when it’s here I hurt my knee. I can’t rely on one strategy to fix any problem. It’s time to adapt.

Let’s see what the doctor says about my knee but more than a doctor visit I need to change my eating habits.

It’s Funny How People Respond To A Title

Last week I had the pleasure of having my CEO in town and having my CEO available to visit customers and prospects gives me a chance to get in a few doors I usually can’t get in. People who usually won’t give me the time of day will block out hours at the drop of a hat for the guy with the fancy business cards.

Don’t get me wrong, I get it; I like to hang with the big dogs too but the older I get and the more interaction I have with top level executives the more I realize they’re just people like you and I. For the most part it’s amusing and I use it to my advantage but there was one interaction that just didn’t sit well with me.

We have a client whose GM is a pretty mean guy. He takes the time to let you know he’s the boss and he won’t be bothered by the little people who do the real work in his operation; but when I brought my CEO by the shop to spend a few minutes he was a totally different person. He was welcoming, hospitable, funny, open…almost nice. And don’t get me wrong; I get it, I see it all the time, but for whatever reason this one just rubbed me the wrong way. Don’t be someone you’re not, at least not in front of people who know who you really are.

It’s funny how people respond to a title. Being a sales rep has taught me one valuable lesson; treat everybody like they’re the decision maker. From the receptionist to the CEO, everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity and sometimes their input will make or break you, believe me, it’s true.

Treat people how you’d like to be treated and more often than not you’ll be treated the same.

First Things First

I’m a true believer in first thing first. For me to be successful at managing my professional life I must first have my personal life in order and today was a great day for my personal life. We spent the morning at my in-laws having a great brunch, the boys hunted for Easter eggs in the back yard and they played hide-and-seek with their grandfather. This afternoon we hung out here at the house and watched a movie with the kids. The wife and I spent some time looking at our calendars for the next couple months and we decided who we’d send t-ball pictures to. I was able to help a good friend for a couple hours and we made a few calls to relatives we wanted to wish a happy Easter to. Simple days like this are truly a treasure and rarely do I have the opportunity to realize how great they are while I’m living them.

The relationships that make up our personal lives are more important than any business relationships we have and making sure we take the time to get our personal business in order helps us keep the professional business moving in the right direction.

I hope you had the opportunity to spend some time with your family today and I hope that your day was as good as mine. Here’s to a lazy Sunday spent with my amazing family and to a great week ahead!
